SELLING LIQUOR WITH OUTA LICENSE. The Waotu Hotel Stock Seized
■ t-T , f # Some little commotion was experienced in Cambvidgtf oft s'Tu^sdaiy Jlaffy jwherfjit became known' that the police, liaving discovered through. enquiry .' that no license fees had been paid for the VVaotu Hotel for almost two years, though 1 , fermented liquors /were beicg retailed to travellers daily by the host of that hostelry, had entered, the. house and applied for the license, and the proprietor (or at least his representative) not being in a position- to comply" with the request, carried ofF-theatocViii-trade in a dray to Cambridge. It appears the license was first granted foi; the, Ho,tel to AraWatera te Wera l»y" the Cambridge Licensing- Bench in 1881. "Mr Raynes, shortly after the license had been issued, leased the premises from Arakatera. In 1882, when the Licensing Act came into force, the hotel was included, or at least the district in. which, it was situated, in the county of \Yest' Taupo Licerising'Bistrict, and in Jiuie, 1882, a'certificate was granted by the Taupo Licensing Commissioners to a person named Robert filler, who had taken over the > business from Mr Raynes previously. Subsequently, the, interest of the concern was transferred to a person named Cook. It* now appears that although a certificate was granted by the Taupo Licensing Commissioners, the license was never taken out, the certi- > ficate lapsing -after fourteen days from issue. Consequently liquor has been sold on the premises without a license since last June. Tue police some few weeks ago questioned' Miller about tho license, but he was unable to give any satisfactory reply,* merely prevaricating. After makingjL further enquiries, by which it was dis- A covered no license had been taken out either at Taupo or Cambridge; Constable Brennan in company with two other constables proceeded to "Waotn on Monday last. They entered the house and found Mrs Cook in charge, who supplied them with liquor. They then asked _to see the license, and the hostess not being in a position to produce the document, they beized the stock-in-trade and carried it off to Cambridge. The case will come on for hearing at' Cambridge at the next i sitting of the R.M. Court.
