, Drowning of Captain Baker. "Auckland, Last Night. Further particulars concerning '. the drowning of Captain Baker, afc Opotiki, have come to hand. The captain was in a b6at with three of the crew at the time of the accident, but the latter were saved. - Efforts weie made to-day to recover the lost body by dragging, but the attempt proved -fruitless. Mr Rolleston's_ Movements. Mr Rolleston, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Rolleston arrived in Auckland last night from Kawhia. Mr Rolleston intends visiting the various settlements north of Auckland. Sale of a Wreck. The barque Mary Mildred, wrecked at Kaipara with a cargo ot timber, was sold by auction to-day. The hull realised £95 and the timber £840. Mr Coupland waß the purchaser. The Alleged Diamond Discoveries. It is reported that a quantity of precious stones, found in the Lower Waikaijo district, have been left with Mr Greenshield, of Shortland street. It is suggested that aft authentic test of the diamonds should be made and their value ascertained.
A Leading editorial in the Word Deutsche Atijcmcine Zcitioig declares, in so many words, that the German Government condemns the unfriendly action of German press, and moie particularly that' of the Cologne Gazette towards the British Government.
