THE W.S.N . COMPANY'S PROPOSALS TO THE WAIKATO COUNT Y COUNCIL.
TO THK KDITOK. Silt,— r Your iasi^e,of the 25th xilt contains a report of the Waikato Council meeting. Amongst other things, I notice a proposal made by the W.S.N. Company, viz. ' :' Thdt' ' the council would at once construct a road at Wairangi to enable them to erect a saw -mill in the district. The counoillor for'the district' Objected, on the ground that expenditure was required elsewheie, ami the chairman does not appcpi* to have .exhibited the same amount of interest in the matter that has generally characterised his actions when roai\s required closing or opening for the sole b'e'netit of another company. As for Councillor Ralph, I can only say that such a representative is a serious drawback to any district, it not his duty to point out to the council the innumerable ad\antages that would be conferred on this long neglected end of the district by opening up such a road and such an industry, am] to luve urged the council to forthwith despatch their engineer to inspect, and afterwards repoit on the merits of the case. The expense of making this load would, 1 am informed, be a mere nothing, and would chiefly be confined to such legnl expciibCb as might be incurred in dedicating the same. We all know the.objeot.fqr yhiuh county councils were 1 introduced, and how this unfortunate end of the district has, advanced tinder the Counties Act — excessive taxation and studied neglect has been our share. It i? true' that an aboition m the Shape of a hybiid*beiween a biiitle and a sleigh track is visible in the dihtnet (it reminds nic \ cry much of a spider's track 1 over a piece of clean linen). This most, ludicrous piece of engineering is due, wo are told, to an insufficiency of funds., > Be that as it rimy, we ai c still au ibolated people, unable ., to jsend , produce of any kiiid ( to f inarket,\ O/ir only means of pmv chasing such necessities of life as lift us above the level of<tjb.e<. savagqjjs limited to the sale of horned cattle and horses. The immediate settlement of Wairangi is fertile to a degree, and would contribute its fair ijnota of produce to the Auckland market if facilities of transport were provided. Now let us consider the W.S.N. Company's offer, and what it means. It means first of all the cqnstiuction of ,a short pieceof level road (all the surveyed roads being too hilly for carting) the estimated cost of which would ( not exceed £100, 23% of which would be borne by the W.S.N. Company. The proposed road would rtin chiefly through Government land, and one of the owners of some of the private property is willing to give any assistance hV opening this road. A private company cannot take land for a road, but the Waikato County Council could. Now this proposed road would lead from 1 Wairangi to the falls <m' the Whangamarino creek. From the falls to the mouth, the creek is navigable for an frdinaryt sized steamer. The result of making -this proposed, r^ail j v then ' woufalJetbat we Would have a sawmill in our micfetf, and we all know -what' that meaus to any district. Well, we Would have our teami constantly cartiug to the falls, and a steamer, giving at .least twice a week froni* 1 Mercer." N6\r, J1 T' ask my fellow settlers if we are going to sit quietly by and see au industry like this pass our doors. Just let us consider tlie home market we will have fpr our milk, butter, eggs, bacon, pork, mutton i and beef ; also, potatoes, corn and Vegetables' Look how it, will enhance value p,f out lands and help to .open the district, i We should insist on a fair distribution of the rates and (Jotyernment.— l ami ;&c.,- \ ',' Old Identity.
