PROPOSED CHEESE FA CTORY AT ALEXANDRA.

Public Meeting. The public meeting on Saturday .afternoon, convened for the put pose of consideling the advisability of establishing a cheese factory company in the district, WilH) owing to the unsuitable hour appointed, but sparsely attended. Mr j ones proposed anil JMv A. Smith seconded, that Mi John Aubin tahc the chair, which was cairicd unanimously. The' chairman having read the" notice in The Wailnto Times convening the meeting, remarked he was sorry to see that the meeting for the consideration of so important a subject as the establishment of a cheese factory in the distiict had not been more nunieronsly attended by the settlers. It was well known th.it the tanning and commercial interests of the district were almost in a stagnant state, at least in a estate of gieat depression, owing to the low prices tanners obtained for their stock. The establishment of a cheese faotoiy would be mutually advantageous to the farmers and the commercial interests. He had come prepared to go into matters of detail had the meeting been larger. Mr J. Westney was of opinion that the meeting had been called at an unsuitable hour, farmers were now very busy harvesting, and could not spare the tune to attend in the afternoon ; had the meeting been convened for the evening there would have been a larger attendance. Mr Jones agreed with Mr Westney, and would piopose that the moethjy adjourn until Satui day next, at 7 o'clock, which was seconded by Mr Jones and canied. The chaiiman was of opinion that the notice should be inserted in The lVaifailo 2'imei, the present meeting being responsible for tho expenses lnoinred. — Agreed to, Mr HiU was of opinion tli.it tlio question of site pioposed'would bo the gipatcst and most impoitant consideration. A vote of thanks to tho chairman terminated the proceedings.

A SUGGESTION. TO TUX EDITOII. Sik, —A meeting on the above subject having been called for Saturday last, the first notice of which only appeared m you i 1 issue of the previous Thursday, no doubt many settlers, myself among the number, weie not aware of the date, and as it is a matter of very great importance to have a factory established on a site suitable for a majoiity of farms, would you allow me through your columns to draw the attention of settlers to the subject of the best position for such an establishment. The starting of a factory at Te Jlore has been ah early mooted some time ago, and I think a careful consideration of the subject will show that in a business point of view a site on the Government reserve there, as near to the Waipa bridge as practicable, would suit the convenience of a far larger number of farms than any one at or near to Alexandra. If the latter township was occupied by farms, 1 instead of probably nearly 'a thousand acres being locked up in unproductive idleness through being nominally a township, a factory there .might have hacl'a chance of being a; pay-, ing "concern, but as it is, the radius front which supplies would be drawn, would not comprehend „mqre, than one-third of the circle surrounding it,- 1 namely that part from the Waipa river round to the Puniu, with perhaps a small modicum from the township itself. That in the .nature of things must be-smaljl. r A fac-, tory atTe Rore would be in {he centre of .a farming country, and would probably receive supplies irom. all round. The general opinion seems to be that a five mile radius is about the greatest distance ,from "whicK'milk can be> conveyed /to' a factory as a permanent arrangemeut, but I am quite open to correction if it can be shown that a greater distance is practicable. - Assuming this, to be, correct, let 'us see the relative position which factories at either of the two sites would occupy towards the different farms from ! which they would receive their supplies. ;A; factory at Alexandra would, beymogt , convenient for the following farms'^— 1 Messrs: Jones,, ; Ormsby, -Grierson, .
