CAMBRIDGE LIBRARY AND READING-ROOM .
-! r-!^ r- ,i The annual meeting in connection with the above institution" was held in the reading-room ,on Thursday f evening last. There was a fair attendance of memtiers, and the chair" was' by the Yen. [Archdeacon Willis. ,The minutes of tKo previous meeting were' f react and confirmed. Anxual Report/— The following annual report was read by the chairman, and submitted for, the, consideration of tl\e meeting :'— " Report of the Cambridge Public Library Committee for; tho year 18S2. — The committee nave much pleasure in reporting that the library 'still steadily progresses, each"year since 1878 having' shown an improvement, iv I its income. For last year the balance-sheet shows the amount of subscriptions to be L 79 11s, as against L6l 3s 6d for. the year 1881, an increase of LlB 7s 6d. Although no subsidy was granted by the Government during the year, the committee have been able to add to the. library 132 volumes, and at the same time have had the outside of the building repainted and j a new fence' put up at a cost of Ll3. The number of subscribers has bee^n 229. The number ' of books in the library is now 1228, and,, the number of volumes issued to subscribers in the course of the year 3225. The' committee have pleasure in returning thanks to the members of the Mutual Improvement Association for the entertainment given in aid of the library funds, and also to Mr'JV.-M. Douglas for a voluntary, donation.^ The favorable balance-sheet submitted may be expected to obtain for the institute a goodly portion of the LGOOO granted by Government in aid of libraries, a claim for which has been sent in, but this will be for the incoming committee to dispose of. There is also now a substantial. balance in hand ' of L2l Is 10(1. -> ?hc committee would suggest to the subscribers that the present time' is opportune to enter in the suggestion book the names of any books which it is. desirable should be added to the library. Two different pl.Vns for the enlargement* and improvement of the building were'pre-' pared by Mi 1 Richardson, under the direction of the committee,- last May. The committee proposed proceeding with the work forthwith, and applied to have the site vested iv the corporation. Just at that time, however, the Governmsnt notified that the allotment would be immediately handed over to the new town board authorities, a decision which approved itself to the committee. The work can hardly be carried out otherwise than by means of a loan, which the committee believe the owners of the site have now power to raise for the purpose. The whole subject of plans and ways and means might* however, be considered with advantage by this meeting, with a view to guiding future action in the matter. Iv aid of the enlargement fund, an entertainment was recently given by the Cambridge Dramatic Society, which was largely attended, but the expenses were so heavy that the promoters had no balance to hand over. — W. N. de L. Willis, Chairman. — Cambridge, January 25th. 1882."
