CAMBRIDGE JOCKEY CLUB.

A meeting of the members of the above club, convened by advertisement, was held at Hewitt's Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, on Friday night last. There was a fair attendance of members, and the .chair was occupied by Mr R. W. Dyer. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Selling tub Pbivileges.—A short discussion took place ou the matter of the privileges. Mr Camp had had one of the piivileges knocked down to him at a previous meeting of the club, and though he had used it, had not paid for it owing to some alleged unjustice. No decision was arrived at.

Aitou.nts.—Some of the accounts for the New Year meeting were criticised, but ultimately, on the motion of Mr J. Forrest, the budget, as laid before the meeting, was passed for payment. Balam'J>shket. — The balance-sheet for the New if ear meeting was submitted by the secretary, allowing the club to have £20 to their credit. The financial position as read was considered very satisfactory.

The Proprietor's Terms.— Mr J. l\ Thomson was called on to state to the meeting, on behalt of the proprietors of the course, their terms with the club for the use of the course and stand.—Mr Thomson, in responding, said it was, the wish of the purchasers to realise the interest on the money which they had invested, and they would be quite agreeable if they got 8 per cent. The total cost of the grand stand and land was £1800, and that that amount at 8 per cent, meant £144 in the shape of interest. Mr Fantham, previous to the purchase of the course by the present proprietors, had let the grazing to Mr Buckland for £90 a year, consequently they would require to take up that payment during the term of Mr Buckland's lease. This would leave £54 to be paid by the club in order to make up the interest on the £1800 at S per cent. The proprietors were agreeable to let the club have' the use of the course and stand for the current year for £60. The,,leasft to the" club would be for a'period of 10 years. The rent for the remaining nine years would be fixed at the next annual meeting of the club; and their reason for waiting till then was that when Mr Bucklaud's lease expired they could call for tenders for the grazing, and probably get a higher rent.' - He > woulS also state that the proprietors were^dQling^to. dispose of the property t(Xne Jockey Chtb so'soon as the* (flub; jtfeß in a position to purchase. Under the old state ,of affairs the clvb f had teen paying £80 a /year, npWiJie believed they would be able to have it for £60.'' Mr Forrest said the amount Was £3 or £4 over the actual i^i&re&t,' ,Wt this was meant as a sort of sinking fuiid'towards the grand stand. They wanted to make no money out of the transaction.-—On rttheyinotioniof»MnXivvypnefch,» seconded 'by Mr- 'ataher, TV was bgreMJ that? %\\s tenm offerai by Mr on. behatf of the be 1 " ' '

about £400 for prizes, whldhilid'not bring a sufficient return. Say £150 ; would that sum not bo sufficient to draw good local fields,? They would find that smaller stakes would ' bring se ttlers from all parts of the Waikato, and people, knowing that their neighbour's horses were going 'to dotntete, eerierally went to see them. This had been the secret of the success of their New Year meeting. — Mr Hewitt thought four days racing, at least four meetings in the year were sufficient, viz., ou#,day in autumn, one day in spring, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. He would propose a resolution to that effect. —Mr Thomson thought they should not be too selfish. By having a race meeting on Boxing Day they would be interfering with other sports in "Waikato. They ought to give way a little in the matter. If they gave way on Boxing Day, they were certain to have a good day's racing on New Year's Day.— Mr AllwiU'proposed as an amend-, ment they should have a meeting on New Year's Day, two days in the autumn, and one in the spring. The amendment was carried. Election of Officers.— The following gentlemen were elected officers for the current year:— President, Mr Every Maclean, Stewards, Dr. Waddington, Messrs Allwill, .1. A. Douglas, Asher, Isaacs, Forrest, A. B. Stubbing, Thomson and .Hewitt/ Judge, Lieut. - Col. Lyon. Haimieappor, Mr W. Percival. Starter, Mr J. iS. Buckland. Clerk of the Course, Mr F. R. D. Smale. Clerk of Scales, Mr H. W. Moore. A Haxvsomk Gift. — A very unanimous vote of thanks was accorded Mr Joseph Harrison for the present of a new pump to the club for use on the course, together with the gratuitous erection of the same. This terminated the meeting.
