TE AWAMUTU PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The annual meeting in connection with the above library was held in the Public Hall on "Wednesday evening last. Notices of this meeting had been put up .at convenient places m and around Te Awnmutu more than a week ago, soliciting the attendance of all persons interested in the Public Library. Owing perhaps to the recent catastrophe in Russia, and fearful lest a similar fate awaited them at the crowded meeting on behalf of the library (in some degree also to fche fact that the meeting was'nt adverfci*e*l), only two were stout-hearted enough to risk the possibility of a aerious conflagration. Medals are likely to be awarded to these as small tokens of appreciation from, the hearts of a grateful people. The Public Library has never - been in a better state than at present, all thanks to the committee (qnd the energetic librarian), of, thepaat year. Mr Carley has had the entire management of ifclie J)ooki, aince» April-lattr"- W-hen takingover the duties of librarian he : ftund .that «»ut pf three hundred ;»nd forty volumes, ■onehvj»Ared«Jift»ixtyweve roißping, /By jewcUiug the dUfcriot ho haa fountf sixty .

five of these books. Thirty t -four volumes have been purchased recently, and the whole library put into, good order. A new committee should..nave been elected to carry on the. good work that lias begun. Perhaps some of our energetic public men will step forward, and'assist in a cause which lacks assistance, and which, if allowed to fall through, will be a lasting disgrace to the community. — (A.
