THE HAMILTON TRAFFIC BRIDGE. TO THE EDITOR.
Sjk, — As a ratepayer of Hamilton I object to money being wasted to make a display at the tardy tieeinq fiom toll of the temporary structure which at present serves public convenience as a bridge. The money may be much more usefully employed. Home years ago Mr J". W. Thompson and I, assisted by the M's.H.R. of neighboring districts in Otago, besides grants of many thousands of pounds, got the loan from Government of £.">O,OOO tor bridges, roads, river embankments, &c, to be repaid in 10 yearly instalments upon the principle of the Local Public Works Act, 1882. In the estimates for ISSI an item of about £10,000 appealed as a grant for certain bridges, and seemed to have a strong political significance. When the estimates, the real business of the Assembly, wei c as ii.su.vl being hurried tluough at the close of the session in the small hours of the morning, and by a bare quorum of the House, I said that unless the vote was to be as> a loan, or my constituents u ere placed on the same tooting as to the repayment of the £.">O,OOO I wonld ha\e to ask my friends to help me in sti iking out the item. The Government said, would 1 withdraw my opposition if the debt of £50.000 was cancelled. I said it they would introduce a clause in the Appropriation Act for that purpose I would. This was done, and a few weeks after, with others, I had the satisfaction to see the splendid biidge ovci the Molyneux at Balclutha formally opened J'nefniw ihbl. This bridge is like the Ngaruawahia railway bridge with substantial concrete piers. I could see nothing to have prevented the Hamilton road bridge being included, but that was the business of the Hamilton representatives, and did not concern my constituents. — I am, &c., Wm. Arch.
