THE NEWCASTLE RUN. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— l have observed a letter in your issue of the 4th, signed "Ratepayer," Puketc, which contains so many misstatements that I must request space to reply. The first is ;— At the annual meeting of ratepayers a resolution was carried directing the incoming board to appoint a ranger to collect cattle fees from ratepayers, and to keep cattle belonging, to non-ratepayers out of the district. The resolution as carried at the annual meeting was simply that the system of registration and cattle fees be continued, which resolution was confirmed at a subsequent meeting held at Ngaruawahia. Second niisstitement is, that an advertisement appeared, notifying that Mr Shepherd's tender had been accepted. No such notification ever appealed in any paper. Third misstatement, that the run was leased in such a lqbse way, that Mr Shepherd con clu<{cd fcl}at fyp gqidd register cattle belonging to persons out pf the district, the fact being that Mr Shepherd received all infotimitiqn from the secretary before he tendered, ami also received instructions from the secretary as to his duties, after the appointment of ranger wat made. Fourth miastatement : — When a previous boaul appointed a ranger, he was furnished with the particulars of his duties in writing, and had to make an affidavit befowsaJ.P. This is wholly incorrect^ both as tq t\\e particulars and the J.P. Perhaps '* Ratepayer" wjll be goqd. enough to mention in an early is.su§, the name of the ranger and or the J.P. before whom such an, affidavit was made. The pith of " Ratepayer's" letter, like that of ladies' correspondence, lies in the end of it, when he advises the board first to dismiss the ranger without ceremony, considerately giving ,them . the alternative of resigning in a body, when " Ratepayer " would no doubt take ;the reins. There is one portion of the letter, where \\> r.sfef.B to, the unholy alliance between the pr'eseii't ri>hge.r anc]. th,e poundkeeper, which makes it appear that the ranger is reaping a harvest from the .pounding. Now, for a few facts.
