ALEXANDRA. The Sports.

Our annual Christmas sports held here on Boxing Day were, notwithstanding the superior attraction held out by a trip to Auckland, and the almost entire absence of the male population of Whatiwhatihoe with Tawhiao, a decided success, some three to four hundred persons being present. All the events were most strenuously and amicably contested^ the utmost good humour so characteristic of the season prevailing. The horse racing was especially well patronised, some seven horses at least entering for eacli event, although the prizes were so small that the entrance moneys exceeded the sum taken by the winners. The stewards were all indefatigable in their duties, and the decision of the judge in all cases unquestioned. The Alexandra brass band was also present, which greatly enlivened the proceedings. In the evening the local Amateur Dramatic Club gave a performance, which was well attended. The pieces, "The Artful Dodge " and "Nan the Good-for-Nothing," were produced with immense success. As these have both been previously played by the same actors, and remarked upon in your columns I need make no more comment than I have already done, that it was a most successful performance, and went off like clockwork to a most enthusiastic audience. The dance which followed was most numerously attended, the hall being completely filled, the Alexandra band finding the mubic. Cricket Match. The Otahuhu cricket team played a match here with the Alexandra club yesterday. There were not so many spectators present, owing to the fact of the visitors having been expected to make their appearance on the previous day, The weather was most enjcyable for cricket, and the game ' a most lively one. The visitors being sh irt of two men, Messrs Sullivan and New sham of the Alexandra club played for (them, and did good service. Mr Ewing, who, owicg to an accident, batted with one hand, did so in such a masterly manner as to gain the admiration of both onlookers and opponents. In the second innings the Alexandra team had the illluck to lose the services of Mr F. Dawson, who, unfortunately, sprained his knee so severely as to to place him hon dv combat. The captains of the teams, Mr N. Porch, Otahuhu, and Mr J. C. Grierson, of the Alexandrians, both did good service on their respective sides, while the bowling and fielding of Mr Bowden was greatly admired. The visitors were provided with luncheon and refreshment on the ground by Mr Connell, of the Exchange Hotel, and at dinner, at the conclusion of the match, at Mr Finch's Alexandra Hotel. As will be been, the Otahuhu men were victorious here as they have been at the other settlements where they have played. The following were the scores made :—: —
