Tb Auotia Tkamwav Laiioub.— Messrs Darrow and Foughey wrote to the Tramway Committee stating that as they Mere anxious the supply of labour on the tramway works should be as good a& possible, they had to' ask the council that the men engaged in the claims should be allowed to work on the tramway construction, the council to protect them in their claims. — The Chairman, in reply, had written to Mr Kenrick, warden, recommending the advisability of acceding to the contractors request.
Cambridge - Taubanwa Road. — ,Mr Chetwynd wrote, asking permission to defer the survey of that portion of the Cambrirlge-Tauranga Road at Mr George Walker'b till after the Christmas holidays, and promising, if request were acceded to, to take^ the work in hand early in January.— Cr. Firth proposed that a letter be addressed to Captain Turner, asking him his charge for furnishing a plan for diverting the road over Walker's property, stating that part of the road goes over a grass paddock, one side of which is already fenced. And, also, that Mr Chetwynd be informed that for the present all action must be deferred. Mr Chetwynd should also be informed that Captain Turner had all the necessary data with which to carry out the work, and that he (Mr Chetwynd) should be kind enough to consider the last appointment cancelled.
The WUHotr, Mangawheba, and Mangawhero Bridges.— The report of the bridge committee was read, dealing with the above bridges. They had interviewed Mr A. Nicol with a view to inducing him to make some reduction in his tender for the construction of the two latter bridges, which he declined. They had accepted Mr Nicols tender of £371. They recommended the painting of the three bridges by way of preserving the wood work. Aroha 1 towards Hatrtilioft, within the' Waitoa riding." In proposing the above resolution, Cr. Campbell said Mr T. G. Sandes, OiE., lmit estimated the Work .at £3000. He would draw their attention to the fact that it Was not at all improbable if they asked for £5000 they, might only get' €2000. fle thought, therefore, it would be desirable, considering the state in which the main road was in during list winter, when for several weeks it was impassable, and also, considering the increase in the traffic over the road, they should take every precaution against the road being in a like condition during the succeeding winter. By applying for £5000 they would probably get the £3000, which was the sum necessary for the work. —Cr. Williams seconded the resolution, which was earned.
Accounts.—Several accounts were for payment.
Te Aroua-Matamata and Camrkidge Road. —On tho motion of Cr. Whitaker, seconded by Cr. Campbell, it was agreed that the sum of £5,290 be applied for under the Roads ami Bridges Construction Act for the making of about 8£ miles of the above road, from the Thames County boundary to Shaftesbury.
Tk Aroha. Tkamway.—The following report was submitted by the Tramway Committee :—lt having been represented to the committee by the authorities connected with the principal mines on the Te Aroha gold field, that about 50 chains of horse tramway would be required in partial substitution of that already authorised by the council; your committee recommend the council to take advantage of last session's vote of £2 for £1 for roads and tracks in goldfields as per minutes of mines letter of October 14th as follows :— Construction of horse grade from top of proposed self-acting grade as per sketch plan marked D, total cost of which from Eto F will be £1,500. The claims which will be benefited by this undertaking, will be eleven in number. Your committee propose that each of these claims should contribute their respective proportions of the £500, which the couuty will have to spend before they could claim the subsidy of £1000 from Government. The above undertaking will cost the couuty nil. Your committee further recommend a slight alteration in the top horse grade marked' on map, viz : Stop horse grade where original top, self-acting, intersects horse grade C, about 20 chains, saving to council, about £400. The council will have to undertake the construction of a self-act-ing incline marked G costing £800, towards construction of which the council will have £400 saved on horse grade C, leaving £400 to be found by the council. Should the couucil carry out the recommendations of the committee we are satisfied that no more complete arrangements could be made for the conveyance of quartz to the batteries from the mines, and which will cost the claims a very small amount to connect. An application should be made without delay to the Hon. the Minister for Mines for the above-named grant of £1000. (Signed) Rodt. FKRcitTSHoN, chairman of committee. —On the motion of Cr, Williams it was agreed that the report of the committee as read be accepted, and that the committee; be authorised to take the necessary steps to give effect to their suggestions.
WAIOROMiA M VI TIJLEORAI'H EXTKNSION. — (Jr. J. C. Firth proposed the following resolution, " That it is desirable the telegraph line be extended from Te Aroha to the Wuiorongamai township, a distance of 3 miles, and that the officer in charge ot the telegraph department at Auckland be requested to take the necessary steps to construct the extension with as little delay as possible ; a guarantee to the extent of £100 per annum, till the revenue reaches that amount, having been furnished to this council, which will be transferred to Government on their consenting to execute the work." In proposing this resolution Cr. Firth drew attention to the inconvenience to which the settlers of Waiorongamai were putby having to pay 4s (id for each telegram from Te Aroha, having to send there, which otherwise would only cost Is 6d. He himself would guarantee the £100. An extension would, he was certain, be at once an increase to the revenue as well as a convenience to the Waiorongamai townspeople. The proposition was seconded by Cr. Williams, and carried unanimously. This terminated the business of the meeting.
