THE NATIVE RESERVES ON THE WEST CO AST.
Haweea Tuesday. FuiiTHKR progress has been made by the trustee respecting the leasing of the West Coast Settlement resenes, he having concluded an agreement with the leading natives ot the Ngatimanutaiakai hapu, Titokowaru's tribe, for the leasing of 2400 acre* ot their land. The Chief Surveyor oPTaranaki paid the surveyois who are at woik on the reserves a visit yesterday, with a view of expediting their work. Some trouble arose yesterday at Taiporolienui with regard to the right of certain natives to lands. The matter is to be settled according to native customs in sr.ch matters, Mr Mackay having arranged that the leading man of the tribe, with the assistance of Hone Pihama, shall hold a meeting and settle in his piosence the a-ights of the disputants. When the lcorero was going on the ■ wife of the alleged aggressor threatened to burn the house on the land, and had actually spfc fire to it, but Mr Mackay inteiferred and had it put it out betoro any damage was done. It seems tins is not the first time she has burned a house down under similar circumstances.
