BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS AT CAMBRIDGE.
In a previou|.i(^ue jge^rej^the attention of our veadeft^an 5 important announcement by Meslra Wells and Soutter, calling for traders, for extensive additions i and 'implements $ .tyie'jr . fine* business establishment at Cambridge.' '" From time to time it hjfpjb^ro^ngTp.^urp^to, advert t» the progress which the town of Cambridge has beeh making iti the matter' of buiklings'as in everything else ; and but the otlier day we'had occasion' to make known the fact that 'the present building used by the Bank of New Zealand not being- large oiiough for the business requirements of the place, the Bank directors had determined on erecting one of the' finest banking houses in the, province outside of Auckland. AYe are now" more convinced of the continuous stability of the place, and of the faith which the Cambridge people have in their town by the intention of the enterprising firm 'of Messrs Wells and Sontter to enlarge their premises to more than double their present size. The plans of the additions show that the front building will have a frontage to Duke-street of 33 feet, with an elevation of 20" feet. To the left of the shop will be a side entrance leading to the upper flat which will be divided |nto suites of offices suitable for" professional men, and others. In the basement story the front portion of the building will be the -principal place of business. And this will be a largo and handsome warehouse, 9o feet deep by 30 feet; Of this depth (05 feet) 45 feet is of the present shop, and 30 feet the proposed addition, thus making the shop more (than twice its present length. Some idea may be gathered of the business capabilities of the improved building from the fact that there will be 200 U superficial feet of shelving and over 460 superficial feet of counterspace. The new counteis, four in number, will urn the entire length of the shop, and the timber to be used will be ritnu and kauri, the best obtainable for the purpose. Passing throng]) an open archway at the bottom of the shop will be situated the ledger-keeper's office, and to the right the'fitting-room, and at the rear of these the firm's private office and the workroom for the dreb&nuking and millinery branches, all on the same floor, and fitted up in the best side. A side entrance from Brewery- street will lead to a loading and discharging shed, into which the goods will be received prior to their distribution to the various departments. When the new additions are completed these piemisus will form one of the best appointed business houses in the province. Mr AYells' old motto used to be, "Second to none," and the firm appears acting in advance of this. We wish the firm the success their enterprise merits.
