BOROUGH OF HAMILTON. Mayoral Election.
Tin: polling for the election of a Mayor ot Hanulion for tlie ensuing year took place yesteulny at the Council Chambers, tUirt ri'oiilted in a victory for Mr John Knov, tlie retiring Mayor, who now enteis upon his third term. Compared with those of former days tlie election was not a very exciting one, although a gi eat deal ot interest was taken in the event. .The friends of either candidate worked well for their man, and a number of vehicles were brought into requisition to take the "free and independent" to the polling-booth. When the poll closed a considerable number of people gathered round to hear the result. At about twenty minutes past six the returning officer, Mr J. M. Gelling, stepped out on to the portico and read the result, as follows :— John Knox (i' 2 Robert Peat 57 Majority for Knox 5 The announcement was received with applause on tlie part of the supportei s of the successful candidate, but otherwise there was no demonstration, and a , few minutes afterwards the small crowd of on-lookers had dispersed.
