SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING AT CAMBRIDGE WEST.

Lively Proceedings. A ookbe.M'OXDJSXT communicates the following : — A special meeting of the above schoot committee was held at the schoolroom, Cambridge West, on Saturday evening last, to consider a letter received from Miss Allen, re her action in writing to the Central Board on the matter of the action taken by the committee over her dismissal. There was a full attendance of the committee. The letter stated that when bhe (Miss Allen) had wiitten to the Central Board repudiating her acquieseense with the action taken by the local committee, she referred only to the petition sent to the Minister of Education. Before the committee entered into the consideration of the letter, Mr Y. Hicks and Mr Hyatt, the schoolmaster, were invited into the room by the chairman, at the wish of the meeting The letter having been read, Ml- F. HicUs began by asking Mr Hyatt if he dictated the letter sent by Miss Allen to the board, and on Mr Hyatt replying in the negative, Mr Hicks retorted by calling him (Mr Hyatt) a deliberate liar, and further stated that the only thing which would satisfy him was a public ' apoloyy from the committee. Mr Allen objected to any such proceeding on the part of the committee, when Mr Hickb,'advan cinq to where ho stood called hi.ni a lying scoundrel, at the same time .shaking hit. fist in hi& face. Though the proceedings had now taken a lively, if not to say a disgraceful turn, and Mr Hicks being present as a visitor, the chairman did not interpose to lestorc order. — Mr Fitzgerald, at this stage of the proceedings, rose and caught Mr Hicks by the arm, at the' same time asking the chairman (Mr Howie), if he allowed 'such language as that used by Mr Hicks to be used to any member of the committee by a visitor. — The chairman made no reply.— Mr Keeley called upon Mr Hicks to apologise toi his unseemly conduct. -Mr Hicks retorted by saying Mr Keeley was too, thickheaded to comprehend the nature 'of the proceedings. After a few other complimentary lemarks had been pasbed, the chairman put the que&tion to the meeting, on his own motion, "That Miss Allens lettei- to the committee be accep ted as an explanation. "—This was seconded by Mr T. W. ;Ricks.-Mr Fitzgerald proposed as an amendment, "That Miss Allens letter be not received as a full explanation.— Mr Keeley seconded:"— Oil the question benig put to , the meeting, two voted for the amendment, and'three for the original motion.— Mr Allen refused to vote at a meeting where visitors wore allowed to 'insult members with impunity.— The motion was declared carried. This brought to a conclusion one of the most unseemly meetings, evgr held in this district.
