WORKING OF THE COUNTIES AGT AS BETWEEN THE CAMBRIDGE TOWN AND COUNTRY DISTRICT.

Sm,— About two years ago Councillor, Wells entered the Waikato County Council and discovered a large amount of abuse in the finance department, and oh, horrible to mention, Kirikiriroa had appropriated the revenue that should have gone to Cambridge. Councillor Wells was willing to forgive Kirikiriroa so long as in the future the coanty funds should be credited to the district from which they were received and returned pro rata, according to, rates collepted,,aud t sp }t .was agreed by-the council. ■ Let it'bercmembered that the Cambridge town rates' for late years has been about £310 each year, aud the Cambridge country rates about £350 each year. Three months ago, as. one of a deputation to the Waikato County Council, I made a statement of accounts as taken from the county books, showini? that Councillor Wells had been one to abuse the very principle he at first advocated. The present Cambridge, Highway District Board have determined to obtain a true statement of the riding account, and for this purpose an application has been made to the Waikato County chairman, , asking for a balauce account as between the Cambridge town and couutry districts. A copy , of these accounts is forwarded to you with a desire that you should publish it for the information of ratepayers and all those interested in the working of the Counties Act. It will be observed that the Cambridge town pays iri J8340 Is, and takes out.as subsidy to, w,ork^ £421 12s 6d, and that tlie country district pays in £3410 9s, arid-Stakes out as t subsidy to works*£7o.
