CAMBRIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH ANNIVERSARY.
An anniversary soiree and social gathering in connection with the above church, was held in the Vublic Hall, Cambridge, on Monday evening last. The meeting av.vs somewhat of a private nature, there being only the members of the church and their friends present. An excellent tea, which was provided by Messrs Garland and Robertson, was on the t.\ble at 6 o'clock, and after the 11 social cup"' had been disposed of, the musical .uid business part of the evening's programme was entered upon. The annual report, which we append in a curtailed form, was read by Mr E. H. Shoard. |
Annual Report. In ISSI, a number of the members of the church resident in the district, deemed it advisable to have a monthly Sunday morning service, and a weekly bible reading class. ' These meetings were regularly held at the houses of Messrs Alford and Morris, and Mrs Brooks. Mr T. Spurgeon, accompanied by the Rev A.. W. Webb, came to Cambridge on September 29th, 1881, for the purpose of laying the foundation of the -Baptist Church in this district. At a meeting of the members ot the church on that occasion, in the Oddfellow's Hall, there were about 25 present. Both the visiting gentlemen addressed the meeting on that occasion. A compact drawn up by the Rev A. W. Webb, accepting the constitution of Wellesley-street Baptist Church, Auckland, as a basis was signed by eighteen of those present-, after which the Lord's Supper was administered. At a meeting held subsequently, the Rev. Webb presiding, Messrs Samuel Alfovd, John Hill, and (ieorge Smerdon were unanimously elected deacons, Mr T. H. W. Morris, treasurer, and Mr J. H. Grigg, secretary. A minister was also invited to the district and appointed. The opening services of the church were held in the Public Hall on Sunday, October 2nd, 1881, Avhen Mr Spurgeon addressed the congregation at both services. The congregation were deeply thankful that Mr Webb was successful in securing the services of Mr David Whytock' as minister. The church of eighteen members had now increased to one of thirty-seven. Services have, since the opening of the church, been regularly held in the Oddfellows' Hall, A Sunday-schoql had also been opened. A branch of the cluirch had also been opened at Cambridge West. Several social meetings in connection with the church have been , held since Mr Spurgeon first came to Cambridge, An-American organ bad been secured for the Cambridge East,church at a cost of £32 10s ; and a harmonium had been secured for Cambridge West afc a cost of £10., The report then dealt with the matter of the contemplated 1 * new church building, which-*\vas estimated' to cost £400, of which £200 are already collected.
