TUHIKARAMEA.
At a meeting of our district highway board last Monday evening, the secretary was instructed to Write to ' the railway authorities, asking that a goods shed be erected at Rukuhia ; and also to write to the Hamilton District Board requesting that body likewise to urge this matter. A large building would not be required, but for settlers ou the Ngahmepouri Flat this station is much more accessible than either Hamilton or Ohaupo, and some provision ought certainly to be made to afford protection from the weather to any goods left there. It was decided that an application should be made to the Waikato Steam Navigation Company to supply the necessary timber to make a better means of approach to the shed at the landing near MrGlasson's on the Waipa. Our local body are anxious to get information as to when the money for completing the road between this district and Humilton will be available, as they are desirous of proceeding with the * ork as early as possible, so that the road may ha^e a chance to harden during the dry weather. But they want to be satisfied tirst that the money will be forthcoming when required. Last year they were not sufficiently cautious, indeed, they are still paying interest on an overdraft, as the instalment of grant for this road paid by Government last year did not nearly cover the cost of the works undertaken.
The Post Office. After the road boai\l meeting on Monday evening a public meeting of ratepayers was held. Mr F. W. Lang, occupied the chair, and lead the notice calling the meeting. The first, business notified was, to consider the propriety of removing the Post OiHcc from Mr Vickers to Mr Blackett's. Mr Hemy Hadfield said he believed it was thiough action taken by himself that this question of rcmo\iug the Post Olliee was plated on the notice. He wished the meeting to distinctly undci stand, that it was purely a question of position. Mr Vickuis had noted as postmaster now for six years, and during that time had given entire satisfaction; there had never been a word ot complaint fioiu any quaiter; indeed he (Mr Hadfield) was satisfied it would be impossible to find a betterman for the ofiice in this or any other district ; but many alterations had taken place in the district since the post-oth'cc was established, and he thought the time had arlived when it should be moved to a more ceattai position. He therefore pioposed the following resolution:—" This meeting is of opinion that it is desirable to remove the post-office from Mr Vickeri' to Mr Thomas Blackett's."— Mr Weatherill seconded the resolution.— Mr E. nadfield proposed an amendment that it be moved to Mr Lang's, but Mr Lang atated it would be impossible for him to undertake it, as he was often away from home.— Mr Charles Vickeis moved as an amendment that the post-office lcniam where it is, which was seconded by Mr Alderson. — On being put to the meeting, Mr Vickers amendment was carried by a in.ijo.iity of four.
A Library. The meeting then proceeded to conbitlcr the possibility of establishing a libraiy in the diitnct.— Mr James Wells, as chuiiman of the school committee, had written to the Board of Education for information as to the necessary steps to lie taken in this matter, ami having read to the meeting the reply received from the secietaiy to the boaid, together with extiacts fiom the " Public Libraries Act," it was unanimously resolved to establish a lilnary if possible, and on the motion of Mi 1 P. Vickeis, seconded by Mr H. Hadficld, it was resolved that Messrs Lang, F. Viekcrs, H. Hadficld, T. Blackett, J. McMicken and Wells be appointed a committee to get all information and take the lccjviisite steps for tins object, including the collection of subscriptions. Sixteen pounds were subset ioed by those piesent at the meeting, and thero is little doubt that the thing -\\ 111 bo successfully started.
The Cemetery. Some littlo discu'-Hyn took place as to wlut was bcbt to do in connection uith the cemcteiy. A comlnittec, consisting of Missis, Y. Viekeis, J. (ilasson, and Waltei Keid, was appointed two years since, but no fmther action li.nl yet been taken. Mr F. Vickers, as one of the committee, informed the Hiufting tlmt tl\e le.ison nothing h.id been dono in the mutter was that an expenditure oi some three pounds of ho \\,i& requisite befoie anything could be aeeoinphbhed, <md they li.yd no funds to woik witli. Mr Hadtield said that at the annual meeting of Kitepa^eib in 1881 a resolution was pabsed authorising the road boaid to vote a sum not e\eec"din<* JJO, to be placed at tlie disposal of the committee, and this amount was available at any time they chn.su to apply for it. On the motion of Mv T. Blackett, seconded by Mr 11. H.idfield, it was resolved to l(\i\e the matter in the hands of the committee aheady appointed w irh a recommendation tliat tiiey should bestir themselves and get the thing settled. — A vote of thanks to the chairman ended the mceeting.-- -(Own Coircs pondent.)
