MR J. SHE EHAN AT THE THAMES.

The Thames Valley Railway. Mr N hi, i; has vi&ited the Thames on .Saturday evening last, and had an interview with several of the local bodies there relative to the construction of th< Thames Valley railway. The correspondence with the Government, as also the correspondence with the representatives of the English capitalists was laid befoie the meeting, and full explanations of the position and the nature of the negotiations with the Government were mado by Mr Sheeh.in. He explained that the act under which it waspioposed to construct the line was the Railways Construction and Land Act, 1881, as amended by the Act of last session. In conformity with the provisions of that act it would be necessary to form a company with a provisional directory and complete negotiations with the Government. That company would then be in a position to secure the concessions of land, etc., provided by the act. In addition to the land .concessions he (Mr Sheehan) had every reason to suppose that the Government would be prepared to hand over to any responsible company" the Te Kopu line, already completed, together with rolling stock, etc., provided for the Hue. These would be very valuable concessions indeed ; and he would very strongly advise them to proceed to form the company without delay. As regards the English capitalists, Mr Sheehan produced documentary evidence to show that they would, if satisfied upon inspection of the line, be prepared either to take up the debentures of the company, or to take over the formation of the line altogether. Mr Sheehan further remarked, that he felt himself bound to give the English capitalists the opportunity to do so, but if they were not fully satisfied with the undertaking, he knew of his own knowledge that the entire capital, which was estimated at £5000 per mile, could be obtained in the colny. In fact, a number of Auckland capitalists were somewhat sorry that he did not gi^e them the first chance to contribute the capital. The meeting recorded a vote of thanks to Mr Sheehan for the trouble he had taken, and arranged to have a meeting on Monday, in order to elect a provisional directory. Meetings were also subsequently held at Paeroa and le Aroha, at which -Mr Sheehau was present. .Full particulars \rere£ given, and arrangements made to co-operate with the directory proposed to be formed at the Thames. ; Between the Thames and Te Aroha Mr Sheehan- was, largely, interviewed. ,by deputations representing in relatic* to matters of ( a , publio and semi ; pub,lio nature. , - } *
