PROPOSED CHEESE FACTORY ATTAUPIRI.
A preliminary meeting was hold at the Taupiri Hotel on Saturday last to consider the advisability of forming a cheese and bacon factory at Taupiri. There were present'some twenty settlers. Mr Lovell was voted to the chair, and Mr Ellis was appointed secretary to the meeting. After some considerable discussion, it was moved by Mr George Muir, and seconded by Mr Rumney that the company should unite the manufacture of starch with that of cheese and bacon, which motion was carried unanimously. About five hundred shares v, ere taken up in the room, and guarantees were given by nearly all the Bettlers present each to milk a certain number of cows. In addition to this the proposed company will be able to appoint as manager a settler who belongs to the district, and is in every way competent to manage the factory. It was thought that the company should consist of 2000 shares at £1 each, which would be ample for all purposes, but this matter was left to be discussed at the next meeting to be held at Taupiri on Saturday, October 28th, when several other settlers from Ranginri and Ngaruawahia were expected to be present. The meeting then ended by a committee being formed of nearly all the gentlemen present, and by the secretary being requested to write to Mr Jiinies Runciman to gain any information that he could give as to the objects in view.— [A Correspondent.]
A French author has translated a passage from of Cooper's novels as follows : IHe descended from the horse in front of the chateau, and tied him to a large grasshopper.' The original reads, 'a large locust' (tree).
