THE KARAPIRO BRIDGE
At a meeting of the Cambridge Town Commissioners, held on Monday evening last, some matters in connection with the Kavapiro bridge were brought under review. The Chairman said, before the meeting dispersed, lie would like, for the information of the boaid, to make a statement bearing on the report of the Government engineer. Mr Gwynneth had, as they were aware, communicated with the Government, condemning the bridge, as it was not being erected on the site proposed by the Government, and according to plans. Mr Hales, the District Engineer, had been instructed to report upon the work, and Mr Hunter had been deputed by him to inspect and take a sketch plan of the bridge as it was now being erected. The result of Mr Hunter's report, as they were doubtless aware, was that the work had not been approved of. Mr Whyte had ascertained the result of Mr Hales' report, and when lie returned from Wellington visited the bridge with him. Mr Whyte, on seeing the plans, expressed himself as highly pleased with both the bridge and its approaches as far as he was able to judge. When in Auckland, he saw Mr Hales on the matter ; and that gentleman courteously showed him all the correspondence bearing on the bridge, together with the plans. After they had gone into the matter, it was discovered that a misconchption existed as to the site. Mr Hales accordingly promised to investigate the affair further, and report again to Wellington. As to further Government assistance, he (the chairman) believed they would have little difficulty in obtaining further monetary aid to enable them to complete the Work, He had also been advised that the bulk of the timber was now on its way from Auckland, and they were, therefore, not likely to experience further delay through this source.— Cr. Hewitt thought it the constabulary were withdrawn, they should have no more day work, but complete the bridge by contract. — Mr Ho&king, the engineer, having made a suggestion, it was agreed that auother small span be added to the bridge on the east side, with a view to lighten the heavy earthwork.
