A Couple of Pugilists. Charles Sauxdeksox ami Andrew Westlana were charged with drunkenness and fighting in a public place in the Borough of Hamilton on the Ist inst, (Sunday.) Prisoners pleaded guilty. The former was fined 1.3 sand costs ; in default, 10 clays' imprisonment; and the latter was fined 10s and costs, or 10 days' imprisonment. Prisoners urged as an excuse for their conduct that they did not think they were breaking the law by fighting, as the country they came from (Russia) they could fight as long as they pleased and the police would not interfere with them. His Worship said, in passing sentence on them, that he took into account their being foreigners. Had it been Englishmen that acted in the disgraceful manner that they had, the sentence would have been much more severe : but should they come before the Court again the}' would not be treated so leniently.

Drunkenness. John Peterson, (another Russian) a mate of the above-named and in their company at the time of the squabble, was charged with drunkenness and disorderly oonduot. Constable Murray said life was not so bad as the others, He endeavoured all he could to make peace between the other two and to get them away, but as they would not go ho then threw off his coat and hat and commenced pulling the others about. His Worship said he would discharge him with a caution, but he had better be careful in future.

Garlick and Cranwdl, who have erected machinery with the latest improvements, enabling them to turn out their work economically and cxpeditiously. This firm are now giving up their drapery and clothing business in order to secure more space as show rooms for their furniture, and, to effect a. speedy clearance, have reduced to a. very low price all their drapery and clothing, which ..will be sold (for cash only) for one month. , This is a splendid opportunity for thrifty housewives not only to secure' clothing but all kinds of Manchester and furnishing goods at rates that will pay to lay goods by till bey are really wanfgl.
