RAGLAN. Improvements to Roads.

Mb James Logan, who received the contract for the erection of the culverts on the Kauroa and Mata road, is making rapid progress with the work, and gives promise of very soon having them built. The road is almost impassable at present for the want of them. Mr J. W. Liddell has been the successful tenderer for the work to be done on the Ruapuke and Waitomotomo road. Writing of the progress being made here with public works, I may mention that Mr J, Pearce, the contractor for the wharf extension, has made a commencement with his work, and no doubt he will soon finish it in a satisfactory manner. Grants of Public Money. It is satisfactory to note that ,the Government have been made to see the necessity of making a further grant of money for the improvement of the Raglan and Waipa road, more especially for that portion of it on the Hakamarata range. The grant of £100,000 which has been placed on the Pnblic Works Estimates for this purpose, will, I think, prove sufficient to make it of such a character that wheeled vehicles may be safely driven on it in wet weather. It is the wish of the residents here that the greater portion of the mountain part of this road should be metalled with some of the stone now lying adjacent to it, and they fully expect that those in charge of the expenditure of the grant will be readily made to see the advisability of doing so. The part already metalled with this stone has macadamised excellently, and there is no reason why the whole of the road over Hakamarata range should notallbe put in the some pleasant and safe condition as the part ju&t mentioned. I notice that in addition to the several grants made, and placed on the Public Works estimates, is one of £5000 for telegraph extention. It may be that from this grant will come the money necessary for the erection of a telegraph wire from here to Hamilton. If so, the settlers in this district will have good reason to feel satisfied with the grants of public money made to them by the Government this Session.
