HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above council was held at the Council Chambers last night. Present : The Mayor, Crs Lovetfc, Tippen, MacDonalcl and Jones. The three newly elected councillors were introduced, and took their seats. Abolition of the Toll.— Cr. Gruulin addressed a few remarks on this matter, and said there was nothing to prevent the council from abolishing the toll on the Hamilton bridge within twenty-four hours. As the money had been granted to have the debt cleared off the bridge, he thought that by the people being compelled to go on paying tolls they were being compelled to pay a tax which was both unnecessary and unjust. — His Worship recommended Cr. Gaudin to withdraw his resolution until after the arrival of Mr F. A. Whitaker, M.H.R., when they would know when the toll could be abolished without exposing themselves to any unnecessary risk. He had received the following telegram from Mr Whitaker on the matter, in reply to a telegram forwarded to him by the council : — "John Knox, Esq., Hamilton. Cannot say exact date. Will be up tomorrow, and will wire to find out." — It was .agreed to await the result of Mr Whitaker's negotiations on the matter, Local Works.— A report was laid on the table from the local Works Committee, and a somewhat animated discussion ensued on its contents. — Cr. Gaudin in seconding the adoption of part of the report, complained of the apathy which had been manifested by the committee in regard to the back streets in the borough which had been grossly neglected, while the footpaths in the main thoroughfares had been monopolising their entire attention. — Cr. Jones replied, and refuted some of the accusations of the previous speaker.— Cr. Bradley thought the only fault which he was aware of was the insufficiency of funds at the disposal of the borough. — The Mayor disapproved of the council's apply- ( ing for a further overdraft having already exceeded their limit of £600 . — The Mayor inQved that the part of tho report referring to the footpath on the east side of Victoriastreet be not entertained, and that the work there be allowed to cease.— Cr Gaudin seconded the motion, and ridiculed the idea of proceeding with such a work as the footpath under notice, as it was a useless expenditure of the borough money. Ratepayers in the back streets ' lived in swamps while the money which should ( be devoted to forming these back streets' was being disbursed in a very foolish manner. — Cr. Jones moved as an amenderiifc on the Mayor's motion, that the. fqQfepath. on the east side qf Vietoriastreat be completed, — Or-. .'Peat secqnded the amendment. Cr. Gaudin said the side of Victoria-street under review did not contribute more than £12 10s annually to the borough' revenue. — Cr. Bradley suppbrted t 'the amendment. — The" M,ayor spo^e at considerable length on the flnanoes 61 the 1 borough, and recommended," the council' to support the motion.
