COMMERCIAL. Waikato Times Office, Monday. MELBOURNE MARKETS.

Messrs Goldsborough & Co. report, under date Melbourne, August 28, 1882 : Wool.— During the past month the amount of business transacted in this market has been very limited, and confined principally to small lots, a. large proportion of which have been disposed of by private contract. The total sales aggregate about 1100 bales, of which numbei 351 bales changed hands at our sale of the 23rd inst. Scoured wools, which, as is usual in the winter seasons, constitute the bulk of the offerings, command brisk competition, and when carefully got up realise very satisfactory rates. Several p.irrcls h tve been sold at prices ranging from lOd to 'iO^d per lb. for merino, and 16id to 16^ for fine crossbred, which figures, would, in many instances, have been materially increased had the lots been larger. Owners of these small lots should therefore, if practicable, retain their wools until able to offer them in suitable shipping parcels of from ten to twenty bales. We now quote as current values :— Greasy — Inferior to ordinary, 7d to lOd per lb. Scoured— Merino, inferior to good average, 12d to 20id; crossbred, ordinary to good, lid to 16? d per lb. Shebpskins.— We arc now quoting butchers' green skins, full-fleeced, and of superior quality, 5b 6d to 7s each ; do. do. do., average, 3s Cd to 5s Cd each ; do. dry do., superior, 4s 9d to 5s 9d each ; do. do. do. average, 3s to 4s 9d each ; dry skins, in bales, &c, superior, bid to 7d per lb ; do. do. average, 3Jd to s:fd per lb. Hi dbs.— A slicht but gradual improvement has been manifested in this market, and current range oi prices show an improvement on those last quoted of from &d to per lb., which appears likely to be maintained, the tone of the market at present being firm. New Zealand heavy weignts, Sid to 4 Jd per lb. Tallow. — Prices have not fluctuated during the month, and our latest advices from the London market are of a satisfactory nature. We quote :— Ordinary tallow— mutton, from £33 to £35 10s per ton ; beef, £32 to £34 ; mixed, £31 to £35 ; inferior, £23 to £31. Best shipping brands, — Mutton, to £37 10s per ton (f.0.b.) ; beef, to £36 5s (f.0.b.). Monthly Grain Repoki. -Since the date of our last report operations in the brcadstuffs market have been entirely confined to supplying local and intercolonial requirements. Prices of both wheat and flour, though fluctuating dvi - inff the month, close at our last quotations. Supplies from the country have been on a fair scale, and have been readily absorbed by the trade, who, as a rule, are very short of stocks. Ihe balance of the season's crop now remaining on hand is held by one or two large holders, who to a great extent, rule the market, and the uncertainty existing as to whether we have sufficient stock left on hand to carry us on till next harvest precludes the possibility of any fall in prices for the remainder of the season. From all parts of the colony we continue to receive highly satisfactory accounts of the state of the crops, and should no unfavourable change in the weather occur a large yield may be expected.— Wheat.— Our market closes with a'veryfirm feeling, and considerable parcels continue to change hands at from 7s to 7s_ Id per bushel— a figure now demanded for all prime parcels.— Flout has had a large business within the last few days, and several hundred tons have changed hands at from £13 15s to £14 per ton. — Oats.— The demand for this cereal has fallen off considerably during the month ; the consumption, owing to the milder weather now prevailing, has been greatly curtailed. Our quotations close at from 4s to 4s Id per bushel, and 3s 4d to 3s 6d in bond.— Bat Icy, for malting purposes, has very little inquiry, and the supply is limited ; for feed parcels there is a fair inquiry, our quotations being 5s to 5s 3d per bushel. We have no exports to report for the month to any of the foreign markets.
