TEE PROPOSED WAIKATO SLAUGHTERING AND FREEZING COMPANY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — At length the Waikato settlers are opening their eyes to the necessity of helping themselves, and to the utter absurdity of expecting anything warmer than cold sympathy from the Aucklaud people. It is true that there are a few merchants in Auckland who have not quite ignored the claims of Waikato, but their are very- ie*v indeed.' ;I notice that persons owning land alongside the railway between Te Awaimitu and Ngaruawahia, have been asked to offer, suitable sites for a slaughtering establishment. Why a position south of Frankton could be considered desirable it is difficult to imagine. I take it for granted that the proposed company intend to go a little into figures before framing' a prospectus or selecting a slaughtering site. It should be borne in mind that people who are about to put their hands in their pockets will carefully watch the proceedings of the provisional directors and should such a thing as local favouritism crawl into this splendid undertaking good-bye to universal support in Waikato. It must be admitted by* all impartial persons' that the further north and the nearer to Auckland you fjx your slaughtering yards the better. I presume all cattle and sheep either purchased by or consigned to the company will be driven, and not trucked, when once on the road a few miles is neijbher he 4 re inor. .there; but let it ,be borne in mind that cattle going northward fare lessening railway freight evfry mile they travel, while cattle being driTen in a southerly direction would be increasing the freight every mile tney in that direction. I will take, 'for instanceVJ^am^here,';.; PiaKdp Hdkohui, Woodlands, , and the greater part- of the Raglan County. ' Would/ Ohaupo be even' a central position for these places ?
