WAIF A COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tin: u&ual monthly meet'tig of the above body was held at the Council Chambers, Ohaupo, on Tuesday morning last. Tliere were present: Crs. Luke (chairman), Grrice, Teasdah 1, Roche, Bruce, .Steele, and Hadfield. Tlie usual preliminary business was disposed of. Evgineer's Rei>om\ —The engineer, Mr T. (r. Sauries, attended, and reported upon beverdl works in the district, including the Te Rore-Ohaupo Road, where he expected to have the drain alongside the road completed shortly, and the cattle stops made. He had brought up plans of several roadb to be constructed in the district, as well as several others to be closed. In reply to a question asked, the clerk stated that the council had £22 in hand, which was the balance of the grant for the Te Rore-Ohaupo Road. The engineer was instructed to have this money spent in improving the road as soon as the weather was favourable.
Gates on Roads.—An application was received from a number of settleis on the To Rore-Ohaupo Swamp Road, asking liberty to erect swing gates on the road. Some of the councillors were of opinion that by the council acceding to the requebt they would be greatly inconveniencing the travelling public. Others were of opinion that it was proper for the council to grant the request as it Mould be unfair to expect the settlers in the district through which the road passed to have to fence the road on both sides by the council making the road. It was agreed to defer the consideration of the application until next meeting. Dog Collar Sales.—lt was agreed that the resolution of the council passed at last meeting, re taking legal proceedings against agents for the registration of dogs in the county who had not rendered an account of money received, be carried into effect, Messrs Whitaker and Sheehan to be instructed to take proceed-
ings. The Swamp Road.—The chairman, in accordance with his notice of motion given at the last meeting of the council, moved that £100, or any higher sum, be spent on the swamp road between Cambridge and Te Awamutu.—Cr Bruce seconded the resolution-,—Cr. Steele proposed as an amendment that the sum be £50.—Cr. Scott, in seconding the amendment, thought the Rangiaohia Board should devote their attention to "other roads in the district as well as the swamp road. The road between Ohaupo and Alexandra hadbeen in a wretched state during the past winter, in fact almost impassable, and when they did take in hand to repair it they only made what was bad worse.—Cr. Roche thought the' Rangiao- ■ hia district the wealthiest riding-in the county, and he would go farther, than Or. Steele, and reduce the amount to £25. He would move an amendment to • that effect. 'THey shduldmake a tairndiYiBion . 4 of the moneys at the disposal of the cbun-* cil between the various ridings in the district.—Cr. Hadfield seconded Cr. Roches _t amendment,-rrThe f» Chairman. of the poorest in the county, as no other district had the number of roads to maintain. The swamp road was their principal road, as it was their highway to Cambridge, which was their principal market. —O. Steele's amendment, that £50 be spent on the swamp road, v, as put and carried.
Financial.—Several accounts were passed for payment, aud the meeting terminated.
