THE CA MB RIDGE WATER SUPPLY.

This important question has again been broughkbefore the town board, and this time we thinkj considering the board have now the neoesaary powers, something will be done in the matter. At the meeting of the board held on Monday evening last, Cr. Nixon introduced the subject by asking the board if it was their intention to take any steps in this matter before the hot weather had set in. If not, he would suggest that they either do something at once, or else abandon the idea altogether for the present. Cr. Johnson coincided. He also thought something should be done in the matter. The Chairman said that any of the schemes which had been proposed and submitted for consideration were, from their enormous cost, out of their reach altogether^ IqfaQtifcwas impossible for them to entertain them. It had been estimated that to supply Cambridge with water from either Hally's Creek, Pukekura, Karapiro, and other streams would cost between^ £5000 and £6000. This meant that to supply the principal streets in the town with water would mean a ' special rate on the property holders of about 3s in the £ in addition to the usual rates levied for town improvements. This would be necessary to enable them to pay about £400 interest, and provide a sinking fund of about £200, ( with . £§Q fqr clerical labour^ and J^ldO for/, working expenses.
