ENTER TA INMENT A T TE A WAMUTU.

Tjie people of Te Aniamutu have for sonic time past been looking forward to a great treat in the shape of a dramatic entertainment by the pupils of Mr Benge's school, which took place on Tuesday night, in the Public Hall, Te Awamutu. Long before the advertised time the hall was well filled. The programme, a long and varied one, commenced punctually cat S o'clock, with the pianoforte duet " II Corncolo," played by Misses Lewis and N. Wainwright. A burlesque, entitled " Jack and the Beanstalk" followed. The various characters were personated as follows : — Miss A. Devin, " Jack" ; Miss M. Lewis, " Mrs Marplot (Jack's mother) ; Miss R. Lewis, " Lucy" (Jack's sweetheart) ; Miss Carley, " Giant Blunderbore" ; Miss Carrie Devin, " The Giantess" ; Miss Esther Lewis, The Fairy" ; Master Higginson, " The Butcher" ; and Master Phillips, " The Dwarf". That this part ot the programme was a success was freely evidenced by the bursts of applause which the audience accorded the performers. After a short interval the concert part commenced with Mrs Benge smging with great taste and feeling " The Harp that once through Tara's Halls" ; Mr Smith gave thej recitation " Resignation," and Mr Johnson sang " Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep", and in response to an encore, the comic song, " Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you," which was equally well received. The next part of the entertainment was a laughable nigger farce, entitled, " Waxination Gratis." The various characters were undertaken by several Te Awamutu gentlemen, with Mr Benge as showman, who acquitted themselves most creditably, fairly bringing down the house at times. And now last, but by no means least in the minds of the young people, the hall was cleared for a dance. Refreshments were handed round, and dancing kept up till nearly dawn. The batid under the able direction of Mr T. Sibley, played overtures and the dance music, aiding greatly to the evening's enjoyment. The hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens — but a word iv praise of the scenery. It is doubtful if there has ever been more appropriate scenery in the Waikato. To say that all were pleased would give but a faint conception of the enjoyment ; and Mr Benge, the energetic schoolmaster, must be congratulated on the success which attended his praiseworthy efforts. — [Own Correspondent.]

Mr T. Spurgeon, of Auckland, will deliver a lecture, entitled an "Evening with John Ploughman," illuminated with lime light views, in the Public Hall, Hamilton, on the sth inst., and at Cambridge on the 6th. The proceeds will be devoted to the Baptist Church Building Fund. Mr Sandes directs the attention of farmers and others to his poisoned wheat, which is certain death to small birds. Notice ia given in our advertising columns that Messrs Beauchamp and Banvell have entered into partnership as butchers. Mr John Knox will dispose of a choice lot of crockeryware, &c, at his mart, on Saturday next. Bankruptcy notices calling general meetings of creditors in the estates ot .Harry Mullions and Edwin Thomas Hedgecock, appear in our advertising columns.
