HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. WEDNESDAY'S SITTING.
The House met at 11 o'clock this morning- i The Private Trams Bill was received from the Council, and read a first time. Consideration of the Hokitiki High School Bill, Wcstland District School, and Christclmvch District Drainage Bill| which were opposed, was postponed. Several private bills were advanced a stage. • ' * The Law Practitioners Bill was further considered in committee. Mr Holmes moved to strike out clause three. The clause was retained by 34 votes to 32. Sir G. Grey moved " That the bill be read a third time." Mr Wkstox moved an amendment and Mr Wyxxe- Williams seconded, " That it be read a third time that day six months." The motion was carried by 38 to 33, and the bill passed. Mr Tole moved the second reading of the Public Healths Act Amendment Bill. —Carried. On the motion of Sir G. Grey the Affirmation Bill was discharged. In Committee on the Eesident Magistrates 1867 Amendment Bill, various amendments were put and lost with the view of restricting the jury's discretion, and limiting the class of cases over which the court could exercise jurisdiction. Mr Westox said that as the committee had affirmed the principle of allowing a court of inferior jurisdiction ' to- try cases of the magnitude proposed by the bill, slander, false imprisonment, seduction, etc, in opposition to' his views, he would move that breach of promise of marriage be also added to the list. The committee divided :— Ayes, 26 j Noes, 35.' ' ' ' - , Progress was reported. , - t > The House adjourned at 5.30.
