Serious Illness of Dr. Philson. Auckland, Last Night. Rumours were current in town to-day to the effect that Dr Philson had died from blood poisoning referred to in a previous issue. The reports were nofc'true, as at a late hour this afternoon the doctor was in pretty well the same state as yesterday ; although a slight change for the better was noticeable about noon. The patient is certainly in a very precarious state, and has expressed his conviction that he will not recover. He has a strong objection to the use of stimulants, and could not be prevailed upon to take any until to-day, although ordered by Dr Goldsbro', who assiduously attends upon him, and has undertaken his hospital duties during his illness. The injury was caused in the most simple manner. Dr Philson was attending a man named Alexander McDonald who has been suffering from erysipelas caused by the falling of a chimney stack on a coal bulk striking him on the head. There was one bad place under the eye, and the doctor , lanced ifc with the object of letting matter out. After the' operation the point of the knife touched his finger, and must have scratched it ; although he did not notice it at 1 the time. He was asked by Mr Bryce, the head nurse who was with him at the time, if he was cut, and he said he was not. That happened a fortnight ago last Saturday, and the symptoms of poisoning first appeared on the following day. The injured part grew gradually worse, and was lanced by Drs. Norton and Goldsbro', and has not since improved, and the doctor is now in a very dangerous state.
