j Since our last notice of this work opera- • tions have necessarily continued at a somewhat tardy rate, on account of the , difficulty which has been experienced in fetching a hard bottom. The;' northern cylinder of the western pier is now down 80 feet 10 inches below the bed of the river, and as yet no indications of a' solid foundation have been met with. r There is some 24 feet of sand in the cylinder, and preparations are now being, made;to remove it by means of a dredge.. Meantime, work has been discontinued, and the southern cylinder, in the same pier is now being sunk. This is ; now" down about 56 feet below the river bedi'The cylinder on the east side, which was placed in position some time ago, but not sunk, was shifted slightly by the flood on Saturday night, but the damage ,done is slight. It is impossible .to say when the bridge will be finished'under present Circumstances, as some time must necessarily elapse before the extra cylinder segments, for the casting 'of 5 which: the Government are now: inviting tenders, can be got ready. ; ; It; i.3 ; to be, desired that the work; wilL,be. finished, at any rate, contemporaneously ,w}tli the,.formation of the Cambridge luiiß, and so enable the latter to be opened for traffc ,at the earliest possible date, .>;. ? yr- ; // ,; i
