KARAPIRO SUBSIDY OF £450.

TO TIIK LDITOR. Sik, — In your report of yesterday's issue of the meeting of the Waikato County Council, you give an extract of Cr. Primrose's speech on the above subject as follows : — Cr. Primrose said the vote of £450 hat l been gi anted by the council on the assumption that it would be recouped by the revenue arising out of publicans' licenses, •which source of revenue had now been cut oft by the town district of Cambridge. As my reply io not given, I think sonic further explanation necessary. The council discussed the subject of the erection of the bridge for many months, and decided about November last as follows -.—First, " That it should be a county work." Second, "That £4."j0 be voted for it, &uch hum to be a charge on the funds of the Cambridge riding. " Third, ' ' That this £4,i0 should be contributed by the local bodies comprised in the riding as follows" :—Cambridge Town Board, £200 ; Cambridge Country Board, £150 ; Taotaoioa, £100. It was also understood that the moneys accruing from these boards through the council were to be impounded for this work until the several assessments were discharged. The abstract of the receipts and expenditure prepared by the council's treasurer, and under discussion when Cr. Primrose made his remarks, showed that the council had paid on account of the Karapiro vote £221, and the whole of this out of moneys received from toivn of Cambridge ! In fact the council has kept £21 of the town money beyond the £200 levied. Cr. Primrose's statement, accompanied, as it is, with the bare balance figm'es of the abstract, which balance did not show that the town had discharged its liability to the council is calculated to lead the public to suppose that the town had taken advantage of its new constitution to withold moneys that should go to the council, and now refused to complete its engagements. My object in writing this statement is not to complain of my respected friend, Cr. Primrose, or to upbraid the council with laxity in the dealings with the other boards, but simply to show that the Cambridge Town Board had honorably paid the council the £200 assessed. Thus. Wklls, Chairman Cambridge Town Board. Cambridge, July 28, 1882. +
