WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

9 The following business was transacted by the Waipa Council on the 25th inst., at Oliaupo, there being present the chair: man (Mr Lake), and Crs. Hadfield, Bruce, Scott, Grice, Steele, Teasdale and Roche : — The report of the engineer for the Ohaupo-Te Rore swamp road was considered, and Crs. Lake and Steele l-epor-ted what they had done. — Cr. Grice moved, seconded by Cr. Hadfield, " That the action of Crs. Lake and Steele on the 11th July, be confirmed." — Carried. — A memorandum was received from the engineer for permanent way, re the railway outfall. The clerk was directed to reply that the men sent to clear the outfall could do nothing without dynamite to remove the timber.— Petitions were received praying for a reduction of the license fees for the Fiankton and Whatawhata hotels. The clerk was directed to express the regret of the council at having no power to make any reduction ; also to the member for Waipa drawing his attention to the inequality of a fixed fee.— Plans of the road deviation on the swamp road were submitted, and the clerk was directed to issue the necessary advertisements forthwith. — The treasurer reported to the council that two of the ! dog registrars had not properly ac : counted for dog collars aud fees, Cr. Lake moved and Cr. Steele seconded, ' ' That the clerk write to the registrars appointed for Alexandra and Newcastle, requesting an immediate settlement of all dog taxes collected on behalf of this council, and in case such settlement be not made within a month, to instruct Messrs Whitaker and Sheehan to take legal proceedings for recovery of same. " Carried. — Cr. Lake moved and Cr. Hadfield seconded, " That the clerk write to the member for Waipa, requesting him on behalf of the council, to use his influence to get copies of all acts relating to local matters supplied to county councils gratis. Carried.— lt having been reported to the council that Mr Turnwell had cut a drain by means of which water was now carried on to the middle of the newly made road, the clerk was directed to request him to divert the water elsewhere, as the road was damaged by it. — Accounts amounting to £21 3s Id were passed for payment. Au account sent in by Mr Barton, member of the Newcastle Licensing Committee, for expenses attending licensing meeting, was refused payment. — According to notice, the chairman moved, "That a grant be made to the Pukekura Highway Board in aid of repairs to the Uambridge-Te Awamutu swamp road."— The motion was seconded by Cr. Teasdale, and evoked a warm discussion. As an amendment, Cr. Hadfield moved, Cr. Roche seconded, " That the funds at the disposal of the council be distributed pro rata amongst the highway boards of the county, to the amount of 3s in the £ on the rates collected to 31st March; 1881. "—As a further amendment, Cr. Steele moved, " That the sum of £50 be set aside out of funds in hand to be available for assisting in the maintenance of Te Awamutu-Cainbridge swamp road." — The chairman seconded pro-fonna. — Cr. Steele's amendment received only one vote and was lost. Cr. Hadfield's amendment, receiving an, equal vote for and against, was lost on the chairman's casting vote.
