Arabi Pasha has a plentiful supply of provisions and ammunition. Major-General Sir H. T. McPherson, X.C.8., General commanding at Allahabad, has been appointed to the command of the Indian detachment of troops despatched to Egypt. Aboukir and Ramleh, two important positions in the neighborhood of Alexandria, have been occupied by the British forces. July 23, 5.30 p.m. The French contingent consists of 40,000 troops, and Earl Granville has urged M. de Freycinet, the Minister for War, to hasten their despatch. Arabi Pasha's strength is said to be 12,000. A Stamboul mailer has been embargoed at Alexandria, having been suspected of carrying letters to Arabi.
