CORRESPONDENCE. PROPOSED MEETING RE BUTCHERING AND SLAUGHTERING COMPANY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—lt must be a matter of great satisfaction to all who are interested in the price of meat to know that an opportunity now offem fox- discussing openly and impartially the best means of protecting the interests of the producer. There can be no doubt that the present price of meat has led up to this movement. The proposed step is, as you say, a most important one, and ought to command the serious consideration of all who take an interest in the advancement of agriculture in Waikato. I trust that those who are in a position, from knowledge either practical or theoretical, to enlighten the meeting, will come forward on the 25th. The future of this movement will, in a great measure, depend on what may take place on that occasion. Alt who have read your leading article in Tuesday's issue, cannot fail to be impressed with the truth of your remarks when you say : "It cannot be disguised that there are serious obstacles in the way, but none, we think, of so serious a nature as to be insuperable when opposed by energetic action. * * * But this difficulty is great only in proportion as the undertaking is small; given a powerful combination of producers, it would disappear." Now sir, I maintain that there are quite sufficient producers in and between the districts of Whatawlwta and Ptaglan to form a powerful combination. They have all suffered from the same cause, their interests are almost, if not entirely identical, and their remedy lies in combined action of the right sort. Let them speak now, or for erer hold their tongues. There are other benefits in connection with the establishment of the sort proposud, besides a fair return of capital invested in shares and fat stock. The Waikato Fellmongery Company would soon spread its wings; the local expenditure of such companies would cause additional population and consumption ; the small settler would have a better and easier opportunity of selling, and all would benefit in buying. In conclusion I may mention that all the settlers in this locality that I have spoken to on this subject expressed their intention of going to Ohaupo, and so will yours truly, Pbogress. Waipa, 20th July, 1882.
