LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.-OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Auckland, Last Night. The war news has caused an increase of a quarter per cent, in the rates of exchange. The South British Insurance Company has received the following cablegram :—: — " Suez Canal risks early on Saturday were 40s ; by mid-day they had declined to 20s, and are now quieter." H.M. Nelson has gone to Kawau, where the officers, ou Sir G. Grey's invitation, will engage in shooting. The Mayor has gone to join them. The Premier mine and plant; were sold to-day for £300. The only transaction reported in the sharemarket to-day was a parcel of Queen of Beauty shares at 14a 3d. There were buyers of Premier's at 7s 6d, and Moanataiaris at 17s, but no sales were recorded. Colonial insurance shares were quitted at 21s 9d, and Auckland gas, at £S 17s 6d. The Supreme Court was occupied all day with a charge of rape against Win. Hazltit of Rolleston -street, Thames, upon a diminutive child named Lavinia Hamilton. The details of the offence were of a very disgusting character. Later. Hazlitt's case was concluded at nine o'clock. He was found guilty of an attempt to have carnal knowledge, and sentenced to five years penal servitude, with one flogging of thirty lashes at the end of the first month.
