AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS IN ENGLAND.
Loxdox, July 6. TitE Australian cricketers commenced their match against the Eleven of Middlesex County at Lords ground to-day. The attendance at the match was only moderate, the weather being very inclement, and owing to the rain play was stopped thrice during the day. The following are the names of the home team : — Messrs C. T. Studd, G. B. Studd, ,T. E. K. Studd, E. F. H. Leslie, T. S. Pearson, I, D. Walker, A. G. Webb, Bon-owes, Robertson, Scott, and Burton. The Middlesex team went in first, but owing to the heavy state of the wicket and the splendid bowling of their opponents they did not succeed in making a stand, and weie all disposed of foy a total of 104. The bowling of Garrett and Palmer was much admired, both being in first-rate form. The Australians then went in for their first innings, and at the conclusion of the day's play had lost •three wickets for 60 runs, Murdocli beinf not out for 18, and Horan not out for 12. Lo.vdox, July 7. The match was resumed to-day, the weather being again showery throughout the day, and the attendance was consequently only moderate. Horan and Murdoch resumed their places at the wickets, and both men batted splendidly, remaining together for some time. Murdoch was at length caught for 52, having played a splendid innings. Horan played very steadily, and carried out his bat for 3S. The Middlesex Eleven, being 32 behind their opponents, went in for their second innings, but failed to make any stand against the splendid bowling of Garrett, Palmer, and Spofforth. The innings closed for 9 1 . Garrett took three wickets for 46 ; Palmer three for 9 ; Spofforth four for 33. The Australians, requiring 60 runs to win, w»nt in for their second innings, and obtained one beyond the number wanted for the loss of only two wickets. The Australians thus won the match by 8 wickets and 2 runs.
Messrs A. Kay, J.P., and J. W. Bridgman have been appointed auditors for the Rangiaohia Highway Board, to audit the accounts for the jcar ending 30th June ult.
