CONCERT A T HAMILTON.

The concert given in the Public Hall, Hamilton, on Tuesday evening by the Cambridge Musical Union and String Band, was very successful -in a musical sense, but financially speaking, we ate afraid it was a failure. The audience though unusually appreciative, was a thin one. Perhaps the slate of the weather may account for many people being absent, though we cannot help thinking that a mistake was committed in postponing the entertainment. The character of the concert was such, as to hit the general taste, and it went off spiiitedly. The instrumental selections by the band were pleasingly rendered, and the vocal contributions were all worthy of commendation. Of the latter 1 we may, without giving offence, awaid special praise to the songs of Mrs Dick and Miss Hartley. The songs, "Home they brought," and " Let the angels in," were gems of vocalisation, and secured most enthusiastic applause. Indeed, it may be said that every item on the programme came in for a large share of approbation. The choruses with the exception of "Come to the Fair," which was somewhat unevenly lendered, were exceptionally good. They were .sung with a correctness and verve which does the conductor, Mr T. A. Bell, great credit. Ihe accompaniments were played by Miss Scruton, Mr Bell, and Mr Keesmg. The following is the programme :— Part I.— Overture. String Band; part •ong — " Come to the Pair," ; Company ; song — "The Silver Cup," Mr Jaggs (encored) ; song — "Won't you tell me why, Robin, " Mr Heinrich ; duet, "What are the wild waves &aying," Mrs Dick and MrWaltho; song — "I seek for thee in every flower," Mr Moore (encored) ; song — " Half-mast High," Mr Trewheellar ; song — "Remember or Forget," Mi&s Johnson; part &ong — "The Forrester," Company. Part 2.— Overture, String Band ; part song — " Biul of the Wilderness," Company ; song — "All the world's a stage, " Mr Moore (encored) ; song — " Home they brought her warrior dead," Mrs JJiclc (encored); duet— "Larboaid Watch," Messis Moore and Jaggs ; song — "Apart," Mrs Heinrich; song — "Our Jack's come home to-day," Mr Waltho ; song — "Let the angels in," Miss Hai'tiey (encored); part song — "Fays and Elves," Company ; National Anthem. A dance followed, the music being supplied by the members of the string band.
