HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL,
The adjourned meeting of the council was held on Monday night. Present : — His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Jones, Lovett, Kobson, Peat, McGarrigle, Vialou and Gaudin. — A letter Avas received from the Under-Secretary for Public Works, dated 18th May, stating that the matter of improving Victoriastreet at the railway-crossing was under consideration. —Mr Geo. Edgecumbe wrote resigning the office of auditor on account of his having become pai t proprietor of The Waihkto Times, and consequently a contractor for borough work. The resignation was accepted with regret, and a fresh election ordered. An application from Mr George Mays to have a culvert erected opposite his property in Anglesea-street, was granted. — Messrs Whitaker and Sheehan wrote on behalf of Mr Frere, complaining of the existence of a shanty on the Hamilton Parade, abutting on his property. — After some discussion it was resolved to give notice to the owner of the cottage, Mr Home, to remove the same. O Jones drew attention to the fact that Frere and others had fenced in the Parade, and the opinion was, generally expressed that these fences would also have to be_ removed, but no further action was" taken.— A letter from Mr H. L. Hooper, directing attention to the condition of Nixon-stroet, was received, pending the report of the Works Committee.— An application by Mr J. O'Gara for a culvert opposite his shop" in Hood-street, was granted. — The seere j tary of the Hamilton West School Committee wrote, drawing attention to the want of a suitable approach to the school, and urging the formation of a proper road along Garden Place. — The Mayor strongly supported the application, and said it was impossible at present to the children to get to the school dry-footed — Cr. Tippen suggested that a road be formed from Collingwood-street, along Hill-street, ' to the school, but it was shown that save by crossing a vacant allotment, which might at any time be fenced, the school could not be approached this way. — After some further discussion regarding the cost of forming 'of Garden Place, Cr. McGarrigle moved, and Cr. Tippen seconded, " that the letter be received." — The Mayor moved as an amendment, " Tkat Mr T. G. Sandes be instructed to lay off a road, and prepare specifications -to lay before next meeting?' The amendment lapsed for want oEa seconder, and the motion was carried. — A numerously signed petition praying for the construction of a footpath in Victoria-street, from Danvers' to ) Rbsstrev.or -'street, \was'i received.— The' Relieving Qffiber, , wrote in answer to a \" communication froin,Sergt. of section 411, Hamilton East, leased by him. — Cr. Vialou characterised the opinion as absurd, and not in accordance with English law. — After some discussion it was agreed to obtain the opinion of Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, the Town Clerk and Cr. Vialou being deputed to lay the case before them, the Mayor dissenting. — A letter from Mr Thomas Lees, complaining of the state of the main drain in Albertstreet, was referred to the Works Committee for report. The Works Committee reported on numerous works done and required in the borough. A deputation consisting of Messis James Hume, W. M. Hay, and S. McLemon waited on the council to urge upon them the necessity for taking steps to make some provision for carrying off the drainage ot the land at the rear of Whyte's buildings. Messrs Hume and Hay spoke \ery strongly in support of the application, and assured the council that unless something were done an epidemic would assuredly break out. Mr Hay advocated the adoption of a thorough system of drainage. — Cr. Vialou thought the object of the deputation would be met by making some temporary provision for getting the water away. — Cr. McGairigle urged that the scheme should apply to the whole of the flat between Knox-street and Collingwood-street. — Cr. Jones moved that Mr J. T. Boylau, of Auckland, be employed to make a survey of the block with a view to a drainage system being adopted. — This was seconded by Cr. Peat. — The Mayor moved as an amendment that a local surveyor be employed. — This was seconded by Cr. Lovett.— For the motion there voted Crs. Jones, Peat, MoGarrigle and Tippen, and for the amendment, the Mayor, Crs. Gandin, Lovett, Robson, and Vialou. — The amendment was theiefoie earned. — Cr. Vialou urged that some mcasuie be taken in the meantime, and moved tliattheioremanofworks be instructed to clean outthediaiufrom Hood-street along Anglcsea-street to Collingwood-stieet.— This motion was afterwards withdrawn in favour of an amendment by the Mayor "That the Works' Committee ask Mr Mays' permission to clean out the diain through his land, with power to act if consent is obtained. — A number of works recommended by the Works Committee were ordered to be done. — The subcommittee appointed for the purpose reported recommending that the salary of the Town Clerk be increased to £150. — The report was adopted. — A letter was lead from Cr. Vialou resigning his &eat on account of his health. —The resignation was accepted, and it was resolved to write a letter to Cr. Vialou expressing the regret which the council feel at losing his valuable assistance. — The statement of accounts was read as follows : General account (overdraft), £223 3s 2d (less license fees) ; special fund account (credit), £222 19 2d. It was agreed to hold a special meeting on Friday evening to appoint an engineer lor drawing up a drainage scheme. The Council shortly afterwaids rose.
