THE MAIN TRUNK RAIL WA Y, NORTH ISLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Wellington, Last Night.
The Auckland members have at length taken the North Island railway energetically in hand. The committee which was appointed have made an interim report, recommending the route via Waitara, as against that by way of Taupo, on account of the superior country it would traverse, its shorter distance, and because in either case the native difficulty would have the same degree of importance. They do not apprehend any serious engineering difficulty, and urge that the other route would shut out the West Coast country north and south oi New Plymouth. The committee further recommend that a committee of Auckland and Taranaki members should wait on the Government to ascertain whether, in the event of a new loan, permanent provision will be made for the completion of this important work. The latter suggestion will be acted upon.
