PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held in the Town Board office, Cambridge, on Friday last, present : Messrs R. H. D. Fergusson (chairman) W. L. C. Williams, G. E. Ellis, W. T. Firth, E. M.iclean, Chepmell, H. E. Wliitaker, J. P. Campbell and J. C. Fiitli. The usual preliminary business having been disposed of, On the motion of Or. H. E. Whitakcr it was resolved " That the penalty of £30 inflicted upon Mr Chas. McLean for non-completion of No. 3 contract within contract time, be i educed to £10, and in the cases of Me&sis McCulloch, No. 1 contiact, Chas. McLean, No. 2 contract, and F.irrcll, and Eiibor, and A. Eritters contract the fine to be remitted." — Carried. — Mr Jas. Sfccwait, C.E., was in attendance, and lead the report of Messrs Stewart and Purchas re the proposed tramway at Te Aroha. On the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth it was resolved " That Mr Jas. Stewart, C.E., be appointed engineer for the the con* stiuction of the Te Aroha railway, and that lie be instructed to make the necessary surveys and di awings \\ ith the view to calling for tendeis for the construction of the said railway, and that a committee consisting of the chairman and Cm. J. C. Firth and H. E. Whitaker, be appointed to arrange terms with Mr Stewart, and to take the preliminary steps, towards the construction of the lailway without delay, and to bring up a report at next meeting. Carried. On the motion of Cr. Chepmell it was resolved " That a rate of one shilling iv the £ be levied upon all tateable property within the outlying district of Te Aroha, such rate to be payable on the 10th day of June, 1882".— Carried. The clerk was instructed to write to the Under-Secretary for Public Works, asking when the £500, now due, would be placed to the credit of the county fund. The clerk was also instructed to wire to Capt. Turner re the Waihou bridge, asking him to take steps to ensure completion of bridge within contract time. Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment : — W. Grimes, £20 ; J. Ingram, £1 10s ; T. Kirk, £1 16s ; Alex. Bremner, £3 ; Cambridge Town Board, £2 Is 8d ; Hetherington and McKnight, £5 10s; Henry Hyde. £9; Farrell and Ensor, £133 2s 3d ;H. A.;Purchas, £26 8s ; same, £52 7s ; A. Butler, £235 15s 3rd ; Chas. McLean, £45 ; Jno. McCulloch, £6. Special Meeting. At a special meeting of the council the clerk (Mr Tuck) received the unanimous thanks of the members for the very satiayfactory manner in which lie had discharged the duties of his office.
The abstract balance-sheet of the Piako County Council for the year ended 31st March, 1882, will be found in another column. The waste basket is the editor's* protective tariff. ' Snuffy Dave ' bought the ' Game of Chess,' 1474, the first book ever printed in England, from a stall in Holland, for about two groschen, or twopence of our money. He sold it to Osborne fortwenty pounds more. Osborne ; sold this .inimitable windfall to Dr AskewJfor sixty guineas.
