WELLINGTON, Last Night.
His ExcKLLKsrcr the Governor, Lady Gordon and suite, visited H.M.S. Nelson this afternoon. An address of welcome irom the city councillors will be presented to Commodore Erskine to-morrow. An inquest was held this morning into the circumstances connected with the destruction of McCarthy's store by fire on Friday, when a verdict was returned to the effect that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. An influential Jewish meeting was held at the Synagogue Chambexs yesterday, to express sympathy with the continued distress and persecution suffered by the Jews in southern Russia* A subscription list was opened, and £50 subscribed in the room. A young man named Midgety, 18 years of age, was shot through the head at Foxlrill yesterday, and killed instantly. It is believed to have been an accident.
