Mv P. Dignax gave notice to ask if the Government will amend the Gaming and Lotteries Act so as to legalise raffles for religious and charitable purposes. Mr. Wjiitakek brought in a bill to amend the law as to married woman's property, and a bill to enable affirmations and declarations to be taken in lieu or oaths, which were read a first time. The following were received from the Statute Revision Commission, and read a first time:—Justicese :— Justices of the Peace, Fisheries, Companies. Lunatics, Friendly Societies, and Inspection of Machinery Bills. On Mr Ciiambbrlaih's motion, returns were ordered showing the average price of all Crown lands in New Zealand reserved, and also of those lands proposed to be reserved for the growth and preservation ot timber since the Land Act, 1877, came into force for the entire colony ; how many notices to claim bonuses have been sent into the Government from the 18th May, 1881, to the 3lst December, 1881, and, further, to the present time, for what articles, and at what date they were given in? THE ADOTEhS-IN- REPLY. Mr Lahman moved the adoption of the address-in-reply to the Governor's speech. Col. WuiTMOBE criticised the financial and land policy of the Government adversely, but warmly approved of the native policy on the West Coast. He was in favor of free trade and direct taxation. Mr Wuitakeh replied, combatting the statements of the previous speaker. He did not think the Government would bring down a loan bill this session though it would be necessary to get further borrowing powers to complete and render reproductive the works now partly done. Messrs Wilson. Chambeilaiii, and Mantell having spoken, the address was adopted unanimously, and the Council rose at 4.50 p.m.
