Tub perpetrators of the Thames outrage, Pakava and Epiha, were brought up at the Police Court to-day and remanded for eight days. Mr J. L. Sinclair won Mr Abbotts prize for the best poem for the opening of the new Opera House. Mr \Y. Douglas, of the lTt>(//</, was second, and Mr J. Kelly, of the &tar, third. There were 33 competitors. Mr Thomas Macffarlane has been appointed visiting justice at the gaol, vice Mr Baistow, resigned. It is understood that the Government consider the evidence disclosed at the hearing ot the Franklin election petition calls for a change in the Returning Officer before the new writ is is&ued. The appointment has not been finally decided upon, but it is believed it Mill be oflcied to Mr Thomas Cotter, of Auckland. A butcher boy named Longbottom, aged 15. was tin own iiom his Uoiso at Devonport, and fractured his skull. Mr Cochrane sold by auction, to-day, the Mniainniua coal mines and plant. The mini's fetched £2,400, and the plant £70. __
