A GLASGOW HORROR.

The Sheriff Court of (llasgow was crowded during the trial of the action against Jessie H. Wallace, ex-matron of the Lockburn Industrial School, for the maltreatment of Mary Jane Park, a girl thirteen years of age, who was flogged until her flesh was red and she was lamed, her scant clothing coming off in the struggle. When in her agony she cried for a drink of water, a basin of water was dashed about her. After the flogging she was put under the cold sp) ay. She was taken to a room in which there was no furniture but a table, and the first night of her incarceiation she had to lie upon the floor without bedding. We quote a few lines from the evidence of Jane Buutime, the girl who had to hold the girl Park " firmly," under threat of being punished: — " Miss Wallace told the girl to lie oyer a chair, which she lof used to do, whereupon she gave her about thirteen lashes. Miss Wallace was very angry, and tore off all the girl's clothes ; after which she gave her a great many lashes. Twice the girl went on hei knees, asking the matron's forgiveness, and as often it was refused. tShe (Paik) received about fifty lashes altogether. The blows were all hard, and Miss Wallace appeared tired after giving them. On Park's body sbe saw red flesh, especially on the left side, with the blows. The girl tried to run away, and she held out her dress in front of her. She was quite naked by that time. It was evident when she tried to run away that she could not . move her limbs properly — that she limped. In the course of the punishment she asked > for a drink of water, as she said she was about to die. On this, Miss Greenhill took a ba&in of water that stood in the lobby, and d-ished jit about her." Miss Wallace, the humane (!) matron of the school, was fined £20 and costs, and was relieved of her duties, but ' there the matter ended. If ever there was a case of cruelty demanding criminal prosecution this was it.

The new pure cash system now being initiated by G. and C. will Crtainly 'prove a benefit to the public.
