The demand for dressed timber is now so great that many of the local mills are working night and day in order to keep up the supply. The Sydney orders have recently increased considerably, while a large number of new buildings are in course of erection. The petition in favour of joining Ponsonby to the city will be forwarded to the Governor by the next mail. It bears between five and six hundred signatures, which are considerably more than half the available number. It has been ascertained that shortly before his bolt Harges removed his account from the National Bank to the Colonial Bank. A day or two before his departure the levanter's wife drew £800 in gold from the Colonial Bank. At half-past three this afternoon Mr Carl Fischer received the following telegram from the Adelaide agent of the firm Harge and Co:— "As instructed Harjes has been arrested. Further instruct me." It would appear that on Wednesday Fischer called to Kingsboro, the Adelaide agent, to assist in every way in Hargea' arrest, he foreseeing that some legal technicality might arise and the defaulter might escape if the matter was left in the hands of the police alone.
