The Budget. - London. April 25.
In the House of Commons this afternoon Mr Gladstone introduced his annnal financial statement. He stated that the revenue was moving sluggishly, and that the income from duties on alcoholics was "decreftsitrg^whilcthe savings of'workmen* were correspondingly increasing. The surplus at the end fof the, Jinancialj} year of 1881-82 was '£352,000. revenue for* the- ensuing -year— is^estimated^at, £85,000,000, and, the^, expenditure at £84,500,000. In view of the surplus thus shown, it is proposed to relieve to that extent ,the present local , taxation., and' to abolish; the annual; damage licenses now levied in Great Britain. *
