WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held at the council chambers, Hamilton Bast, yesterday. There were present : Captain Steele (chairman) Crs. Primrose, S. S. Graham, Runciman, and Hewitt, . The usual;preliminary, husiness beingWisposed of, the chairman introduced Mr, Hewitt, who was recently elected to represent the Cambridge' riding in 'the council. — Pfons and specifications were received from Mr Collins, Huntley, of the proposed bridge over the' WairangiCreek. Two tenders were received for the work, 1 viz., that of Robt. Muir, at £60 and that of Jno. O'Shea at £80. Another tender was received, frem ,Mr Henderson, Ngaruawahia, for the , same work. *The council agreed to leave the matter in abeyance, and refer it to Ci\ Ralph to see -whether, -it Would' not be better to get Mr Henderson to build the bridge at his price, than to build it according to the plan of Mr Collins. The, KLarapiro Bridge.. • ' Cr. Hewitt' in bringing' the' 'matter of the Karapiro bridge before the council, laid on the table . communications from Uuder-Secretary of Public Works in reference to the work* also a resolution of the Cambridge Town Board passed at the last meeting of that body, re the same work.-pThe Chairman spoke at considerable length' in favour of the work. It was a local work pure and simple, and by giving it over to the Town Board they would only be doing what would be most suitable to both parties. The board had got the increased vote from the Government iby their own exertions, and he could not see why the local body were not as well able to carry out the work as $he council .The Cambridge people 'cdulu thus have the work done to 'their own satisfaction. Though it was, a bad precedent to establish; he would recommend that the resolution passed at the last meeting of the council } re the work be rescinded, and Hui resolulution of the October meeting adopted, i.e., that the Town Board should do the work. — Cr. Primrose concided with what the chairman had said, and believed the council would be only doing what was proper in leaving the work entirely in the hands of the Cambridge representatives. — Mr Hewitt applied on behalf of the Cambridge Town Board to have the work supervised, and the management left entirely in the hands of- the, council, that being the expressed feeling of the board. — Cr. Runciiiian then moved that the resolution passed by the council in October, relative to the Karapiro biidge, to the effect that the supervision of the work be left to the Cambridge Town Board be maintained. This was seconded by Mr S. S. Graham and agreed to. On the motion of Cr. Primrose it was resolved that a sum of £70 should be voted to the Kirikiriroa Highway Board by way of subsidy, and_ajnm of £20 to the Tamahere Board", half ofwirieh-aUoiild be debited to the Cambridge Riding aftdthe other half to the Kirikiriroa Riding. Cv. Graham on behalf of the Cambridge Highway Board seeing that thei-e was a credit balance to the Cambridge riding, applied for £70 to assist them in carrying out some works in hand, the board being at the present time badly olf for funds, and in want of the assistance of the council. — Cr. Ruuciman seconded the application, which was unanimously endorsed by the council. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the. council rose.
