HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The adjourned fortnightly meeting of the council was held on Wednesday. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Gaudin, McGarrigle, Tippen, Lovett, and Peat— A petition was read from residents in Anglesea, Clarence and Knox streets, asking to have these gravelled, and a portion of Clarencestreet near the Ohaupo road formed. Referred with instructionsto carry out the work to the Works Committee.— Mr Steadman wrote asking for permission to take a few loads of gravel from the Borough pits for the purpose of laying down concrete on the footpath adjoining the Bank of New Zealand. Grantedr— Mr 0. Rogers wrote, calling attention to the dangerous condition of the bridge over drain through his acre, Hinton's Gully. It was resolved to effect the necessary l-epairs at onee — An application from Messrs B. and J. Coleman, to have a culvert laid down opposite their shop in Victoria-street, was granted. — A telegram was read from the Returning Officer, Auckland, intimating that a refund of Barker's passage money to Auckland had been forwarded.— The Works Committe reported, referring the matter of Col. Lyon's landing back to the council ; recommending that gravel be laid on portions of station road ; intimating that specifications were being prepared for Peach Grove road, and tenders would be invited as soon as possible ; suggesting certain alterations in regard to main drain, , Hamilton West at junction of Hood and Anglesea streets } recommending that main drain culvert, Cook-street, Hamilton East, be covered to widen street, ami reporting that owing to damage done by late rains to bridge on station road, Claudelaiuls, the committee had oidered repairs to be effected. — Regarding Col. Lyon's lauding, Cr, Peat moved that Col. Lyon be requested to fill up steps at at present cut in the river bank, substitute wooden steps for same, and place & post in position to which to moor his boat. — This was seconded by Cr. McGarrigle.— The Mayor moved as an amendment that the work be carried otit by.the council. He thought it onty just and risrht that they should provide a place for boats at this point.— This was seconded by Cr. Gaudin. — For the amendment there voted the mover and seconder only, and the motion was then put and carried.— lt was resolved that only those portions of the station road requiring immediate attention be gravelled, and that loads of gravel be deposited at intervals to be used in repairing road as required.— The matter of improving main drain at junction of Hood and Angleseastreets was referred back to the Works Committee, the councillors expressing an opinion that an alteration of some kind was necessary for the safety of the public. — The other portions of the report were unanimously adopted, and the action of the committee in promptly repairing damage at railway approach bridge appro\ed. — A number of accounts were passed for payment. — The statement of funds was read as follows :— General account (overdraft), £219 9s 2d; special fund account (credit), £143 3s Bd.— lt was resolved to procure brands for the purpose of stamping all borough property. — The services of Mr Daley, bridge toll collecter, were retained for the ensuing month. — A resolution was passed, granting leave of absence to Cr. Vialon on account of ill health. — It was resolved that the selection of a pound site for Hamilton East be referred to the "Works Committee.— The Town Clerk reported that no tenders had beep received for diainage works at Gardiuer'a gully. — The Mayor said it would be necessary to call for fresh tenders. — The Chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. McGarrigle) said the members of the committee had visited the locality, and they were of opinion that the water could be taken down Cook-street, past Messrs. Coleman'sshop, for lessmoney than would be required to cany out the original plan. He moved, therefore, that the engineer be instructed to take the levels of Cook-street, and report at special meeting of the council on Monday night next. — After some discussion the motion was agreed to — Mr F. Gaudin applied to have tli e lease of that portion of allotment 411 lying behind the Waikato County Council Chambers put up to auction. — The application was granted, and the Works Committee were authorised to, fix the upset price and report on Monday, next. — Cr. Tippen wished to ' know whether anything had been done in regarcl to the timber removed from the bridge approach by the contractor, Mr Booth. — The Town Clerk said he had, as directed, written to Mr Booth, who informed him < tHat he did not intend noticing the communication. — Cr. Tippen then moved that the councillors present be a,committee to investigate the right of the contractor to remove t the-^timber-, and if necessary, obtain legal opinion on the matter. —This was seconded by Cr. McGarrigle. — The' Mayor protestjedj against incurring any' expense. they were going to law.— The amendment, not muling a seconder, lapsed, ami the motion was then put oncl carried, the Mayor dissenting.— This was all the business.
